Many professional jazz saxophonists, such as Steve Coleman and Pierrick Pedron, play the Selmer Paris Reference 54. Modeled after the classic Selmer Mark VI, it has a rich and powerful sound that’s perfect for jazz. I've split out all the OT posts into the OT forum. The Selmer Paris Reference 54 is often considered the best jazz saxophone out there today. This horn was simply amazing-I still hear. Yamaha 82Zs are very consistent and well-made saxophones, but they lack the splendor of the Selmer Ref.

These horns are neither reproductions of the classic models nor are they meant to replace Selmer’s top-of-the-line saxophone, the Series III. The low c key responds great (now that it has a 'leaf spring'). Selmer has responded to the laments by bringing out two new tenors, the Reference 54 and the Reference 36, that are made in the spirit of the Mark VI and the Balanced Action, respectively. The reference altos are essentially a MkVI with modern keywork. A major favorite among jazz saxophonists the Reference 54 offers a rich, centered, throaty sound that even barks well in the lower register. The neck to body fit is good, but this Ref. The keywork of the Selmer 72 alto saxophone is extremely fluid and reacts well to even the most wicked licks.

There may be some confusion over model/designation - the altos were only made as reference models, this is the alto equivalent to the Ref 54 Tenor (Ref 36 Tenor was not available as a Kookaburra). A major favorite among jazz saxophonists, the Reference 54 alto saxophone offers a rich throaty sound that even barks well in the lower register. Inspired by the Mark VI model released in 1954, the Selmer Paris 72 Reference 54 alto is a professional saxophone that integrates the Mark VIs legendary acoustic characteristics with innovative modern key work and better intonation. This model has recently been discontinued. This is one of the standard ones which were made in 2006 only, about 330 were made according to web sources. This instrument is brand new in the manufacturers packaging.

[Admin Edit - There were 2 types of Kookaburra limited edition altos, the standard and limited.

Any body interested in buying my Selmer Ref 54 Kookabora Alto sax, I have owned it for approx 3 or 4 years and it has spent most of its life with me sleeping in its original case, I tend to use my 62 and didn't want to go scratching it around the neck strap ring, it plays perfectly and it was serviced earlier this year by Steve Crow in Leeds a guy who specialises in saxophones, there is some spotting under the lacquer but very minor and some slight tarnish in the engraving, I will try to post some pics later, the asking price is £2500 and at that I'm losing £300 plus I will throw in free delivery and 5% to the charity.
